franchise stars ranking 1980-2006

it's intriguing.
it's intriguing that even if i'm a quite big hater of 'stats-first' attitude and evaulation of players,
today i jumped onto this bandwagon.
tonite the suns plays the hawks, and because i had a lot of time (my gal needed to take a nap for
a while), i got a flash to my head, and, all of a sudden, an interesting idea popped out: who's the
best franchise-star ever?
i'm used reading tons articles about basketball - where authors recount about their beloved
teams, how lousy/good/great those times have been and so on.
everybody claims something else, thus i decided to split a knot.
this means i created three categories (regular season, playoffs and overall) and ranked the
stars/franchises during times in which a respective player held a torch.
everyone knows that bird was green, air was red, admiral was white or magic yellow - but which
fans have had the best times following their fave man?
i know that my "creation" is pretty inept and with holes - it examines a player's whole career with
his franchise, so he could have been too young to contribute in the beginning or too old to be the
force in his waning days, i didn't take into consideration a player's health issues, points scored or
whatever, however we gotta face the facts.
(i feel ashamed that my "machine" generates ewing ahead of olajuwon in the 'b' category. but hey, you cannot have
everything!)
i'm just too lazy, so my research includes the superstars since 1980 (1979-80) - i immensely
wanted to have at least the evaluation of the magic-larry duo/era (note: you know, when i think
about it, i'll demand some grant from european union. my back and eyes suck).
the first condition were at least seven seasons of playing (and being the best hoopster, although
this is sometimes very misty) for one team.
that's a span which i regard as worthy of franchise-star label.
as i wrote, the research is since '80, for example george gervin is ineligible because he was a
1976-1985 member of the spurs.
i'm sorry, iceman.
i calculated an average of player's respective seasons, e.g. barkley, 8 seasons, .565 avg, then in
the 'b' - his playoff rating number (see the chart below), then i combined it in 'c'.
whether i did a successful or at least honorable job, judge it by yourself.
hopefully, somebody will be pleased.
(i wait a full mailbox of insults from the rockets fans - that 'dream' thing is killing me hard.
but to ditch this work?
are ya kiddin' me?!!)
this isn't to tell who's been the best or who could/would/should outplay whom - this is how they
led their teams and cities in their long stints.
some superstars just haven't had the opportunity to play somewhere so long (moses malone).
the list may be incomplete, but i tried to throw in everybody who was possible.
(well, i have an incentive to blog about dennis rodman, i just can't forget his green hairdo plus
white spurs uniform.
everytime i saw him balling - i went bonkers.
if larry the legend was an apostle of basketball jesus, rodman was a devil.
but this isn't supposed to be a blog about the worm.
the end.)
well, perhaps i'll become a noted statistician.
i'm frightened!
btw, only fyi, my math is .979 at best.
i wait for some feedback, nothing's better than "gotta love this stuff" mail and nothing's more
enthralling than "you biased lame duck" one.
chill out!

# i couldn't write all stars - sorry for some omissions (in fact, all these stars are from ken
shouler's list of 100 greatest nba players of all time) and sorry that , for example, pippen, mchale
or worthy have to be "only" a sidekicks of their franchise players, not to mention the magic-abdul
jabbar dilemma, but magic has an edge; current young stars (like wade in miami) are not
included.

p.s.: if stephen jackson were to average 36 points per game for the duration, then the warriors
pulled off the biggest heist since the brinks robbery.
perhaps he'd do just that if golden state only played indiana. (-charley rosen)
p.s.2: *all you guys can do is play video games and watch porn movies,* said phil jackson to the
lakers.
p.s.3: gerald green - like al jefferson and kendrick perkins - spent less time in college than kevin
federline. (-randy hill)
p.s.4: chris kaman represents $52m worth of nothing. (-charley rosen)
p.s.5: darrell armstrong is spectacular.
he's 38, 6'1", but he still can dunk and BLOCK FROM BEHIND!!
